Najib confirms turned off fuel supplies to Iran

WASHINGTON, April 16 — Malaysia has officially ceased fuel supplies to Iran, on the back of looming US sanctions on the Islamic republic over its continued pursuit of a nuclear development programme, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak announced yesterday.

“It’s going to be quite inevitable that additional sanctions will be imposed in the near future unless there is some movement in the right direction by Iran,” Najib was quoted in an AFP report today.

This comes after confirmation yesterday from state oil firm, Petronas, that it had stopped the sale of gasoline to Iran since the middle of March.

According to Najib, the decision was reached after discussions between his administration and the state-owned Petronas.

Najib had also met US President Barack Obama on the sidelines of the recent Nuclear Security Summit in Washington, where the prime minister expressed support for Obama over the need send a strong message to the Iran.

“The two leaders also agreed on the need for the international community to send a clear signal to Iran that while it has the right to develop peaceful uses of nuclear energy, Iran should not use this right to develop nuclear weapons capability,” the White House said in a statement on Monday.

The prime minister said although Malaysia supported Iran’s right to pursue the development of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, the republic was obliged to meet a UN Security Council order directing it to halt uranium enrichment until the purpose of such activities could be independently verified by the IAEA.

“They (Iran) must earn the trust of the international community and the only way they can earn the trust is to be fully transparent in whatever they do and allow full verification by the IAEA and there are some serious doubt as to whether this has been carried out or has been complied with by Iran,” he continued in the AFP report.

Petronas last shipped a gasoline cargo into the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas between March 4 and 5, industry sources said.
