2 Exco Tolak Fitnah Hassan Ali

Kos pejabat: 2 Exco nafi dakwaan Hasan

-SH

Hasan says other excos spent more

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Selangor executive council member Hasan Ali claimed today that other executive councillors spent more than he did in response to accusation that his office’s renovation cost was exorbitant.

The sacked PAS leader said the RM850,000 spent on his office was still lower than the refurbishment costs of Dr Xavier Jeyakumar and Dr Halimah Ali’s respective offices and questioned the motive behind the scrutiny on him.

Last Friday, PKR deputy president Azmin Ali accused Hasan of spending RM300,000 to renovate his office, and RM550,000 for a Selangor Malay Customs and Heritage Corp (Padat) conference when the latter was chairman of the state body.

Azmin, the Bukit Antarabangsa assemblyman, also claimed Hasan did not conduct open tenders for road maintenance contracts when he was the Infrastructure and Public Amenities executive council chairman.

Hasan said Azmin, who also had been accused of financial misappropriation in the past, had no right to question his credibility.

“The cost to renovate my office, which was to fit 19 staff, was still low compared to Xavier and Halimah,” the former Selangor PAS chief told a press conference at his house here.

“Azmin has no locus standi to question my credibility as he has yet to explain all the accusation of financial irregularities thrown against him.”

Hasan was sacked from the party on Jan 8 and subsequently removed from his executive council post for his belligerence and continuous attacks on the Pakatan Rakyat state administration.

He claimed the state policies were betraying Islam, the Malays and the royalty and put the blame on Pakatan chief and Selangor economic adviser, Anwar Ibrahim, saying his liberal policies were influencing the Selangor government’s directions.

PAS had him removed after he went against party instructions and called for supporters to avoid a rally held on the day Anwar’s sodomy trial verdict was handed down.

Plot to oust Khalid

Hasan has since gone on a nationwide campaign “in the name of Islam and Malay unity” through his NGO, Jati, which has become his platform to criticise the Selangor government’s supposed “anti-Islam” policies.

Azmin’s attack on him was believed to be in response to Hasan’s campaign but the latter said the criticism was only hurting Khalid Ibrahim’s credibility as the Menteri Besar.

“What he is doing is only attacking the credibility of the Pakatan government,” Hasan said, pointing out that renovation cost of his office was approved by the state government.

He accused Azmin of attempting to “kill two birds with one stone” when questioning the cost, saying the criticism was not only meant for him but was an attack on Khalid as well.

“It is understood that he [Azmin] had long tried to oust Khalid,” he said. Azmin had denied the allegation although it is widely known that he and Khalid have had conflicts in the past.

Hasan urged Khalid to probe into the expenses of all executive councillors and other state companies, naming state financial officer Arif Abdul Rahman as an example of the lack of transparency in Khalid’s governance.

Arif was said to have been given RM250,000 annually by state-owned firms like Kumpulan Darul Ehsan, Worldwide Holdings and PKNS since 2008 for overseas holidays and receives a monthly salary of up to RM100,000 for “being a silent director” on these companies.

Bad faith

In an immediate reaction, Jeyakumar said Hasan’s allegation was done in bad faith.

“I can take all of you (reporters) to my room. The only renovation I did was to change the carpet and build two smaller meeting rooms. I will reveal the figure tomorrow. Hasan’s allegation is a lie.”

“I think the actual cost (of renovation to his office) was less than RM100,000. I remember because we are very particular about costs…we also want to keep the costs low,”
he told reporters at the Selangor state assembly.

He said the renovation works were done soon after Pakatan Rakyat took over the administration of the state following the 2008 general election.

Meanwhile Halimah also refuted Hasan’s allegation, saying that she had never shifted office since 2008.

“My office is just by the side of the state finance officer’s office. From then to now, I have not done any renovation to my office,”
she added. -FMT
